Lagos: Nigerian footballer Alex Iwobi has expressed hope that Nigeria could still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their elimination by the Democratic Republic of Congo in the continental playoffs. The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) is reportedly investigating DR Congo regarding player eligibility during the World Cup qualifiers.
According to Ghana Web, DR Congo defeated Nigeria on penalties to secure a spot in the intercontinental playoff as one of Africa's representatives. However, Nigerian outlet Arise News has reported that FIFA is probing DR Congo for allegedly fielding ineligible players during the playoffs. Reports suggest that about nine DR Congo players switched nationalities without completing the necessary legal and administrative procedures, although FIFA has not yet issued an official response.
In an interview, Iwobi shared his thoughts on whether he would prefer winning an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy over a World Cup title had he won. The Fulham midfielder expressed that his team is waiting for the outcome of the petition by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and hopes for a favorable result, potentially securing qualification.
Iwobi highlighted the importance of both tournaments, stating that while the AFCON represents a significant legacy for their generation, many younger players aspire to experience the World Cup. He maintained a neutral stance, acknowledging the difficulty in choosing between the two competitions. He emphasized the challenge of making such a decision, recognizing the AFCON as a memorable achievement while understanding the desire for his teammates to participate in the World Cup.
