Accra: The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a clarification regarding the revised fees for the Ghana Card registration and related services, emphasizing that these charges were approved by Parliament and not independently set by the Authority.
According to Ghana News Agency, the NIA stated that the fees were endorsed under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2512), in line with the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080). A statement from Mr. Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, confirmed that the revised fee structure became effective on February 2, 2026, following the necessary legislative and parliamentary procedures.
The NIA addressed reports and public commentary suggesting that it had recently introduced or raised fees for the Ghana Card services. The Authority labeled these reports as misleading, asserting that they did not accurately represent the official fee structure or its legal justification.
The NIA reassured citizens that its 276 regular district offices across the country remain operational and continue to provide Ghana Card registration services. It reiterated that first-time registration is free for individuals under 25 years, while those aged 25 and above must pay a GHS30 processing fee.
Additionally, the NIA outlined other approved fees, including a GHS200 charge for card replacement, while record updates remain free. The comprehensive fee schedule covers additional services such as card renewal and nationality updates.
The Authority urged the public to differentiate between fees for services at regular district offices and those associated with its Premium and Prestige services. It clarified that the 24-hour Prestige Centre does not replace or lead to the closure of regular registration centers.
The inaugural Prestige Centre, located in Labone, Accra, began operations on August 1, 2026, providing a 24/7 service option. The NIA highlighted that this center offers a fee-based service aimed at enhancing convenience, flexibility, and expedited access to NIA services, without making its use mandatory.
Public access to Ghana Card services remains available at regular district offices, with premium and prestige options for those seeking enhanced service experiences.
