Accra: Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, has disclosed a significant increase in coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which rose from 57% to 66% between 2024 and 2025. This announcement was made during an interview on Channel One TV, as monitored by GhanaWeb on April 15, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Bampoe regarded this progress as a major achievement within a short period since he assumed leadership. He emphasized the Authority's commitment to reducing fraud by introducing artificial intelligence to monitor claims patterns and preparing to implement a biometric verification system to enhance accountability.
Dr Bampoe outlined a three-point strategic vision that aligns with the government's broader initiatives, such as the 'Mahama Cares' program, which focuses on providing free primary healthcare, investing in healthcare personnel, and reducing illegal charges to ensure affordable healthcare delivery. He noted that timely payments to over 5,000 healthcare providers have increased system reliability and confidence, encouraging more facilities to seek NHIS accreditation.
The NHIS, introduced in 2003, aims to replace the previous 'cash-and-carry' system and ensure equitable access to healthcare nationwide.
