Akim oda: The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has taken decisive action against Akim Oda Government Hospital following an audit that exposed fraudulent activities and service abuse. The hospital has been ordered to refund over GHS300,000 due to illegal charges imposed on patients.
According to Ghana Web, a statement from the NHIA Corporate Affairs Directorate dated August 18, 2026, highlighted the Authority's determined efforts to curb illegal charges across hospitals nationwide, which led to this significant punitive measure. Abdul Karim Naatogmah from the Directorate disclosed that the hospital's management was compelled to refund GHS312,413.51 after auditors confirmed discrepancies in claims and service delivery processes.
The investigation was initiated after a whistleblower reported the misconduct, prompting the NHIA to conduct a compliance audit. The findings revealed significant fraud and abuse under the Authority's Service Provider Agreement, resulting in sanctions against the hospital.
Naatogmah emphasized the negative impact of persistent extortions and illegal charges on the public's trust in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). These practices have led to a decrease in membership renewals and have discouraged potential new members from enrolling. In response, the NHIA held an emergency meeting, which also resulted in the suspension of three pharmaceutical companies to address these issues.
The NHIA continues to monitor and enforce compliance to restore trust and ensure the integrity of the NHIS, underscoring its commitment to protecting patients and maintaining the scheme's credibility.
