Accra: Government has been urged to expedite the passage of the Conduct of Public Officials Bill to curb corruption and improve accountability in the public sector. It was also called upon to ensure the passage of the Procurement Authority Amendment Bill and the Public Tribunal Bill to strengthen the fight against corruption.
According to Ghana News Agency, the call was contained in a communiqu© presented at the close of the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference in Accra by Professor Simon-Peter Kafui Aheto, an Associate Professor of Information Technology and Education at the Department of Distance Education, University of Ghana. He emphasized that reducing corruption is central to achieving national development goals.
The conference, organized by the School of Continuing and Distance Education of the University of Ghana, took place from January 5 to 8, 2026, bringing together policymakers, academics, industry leaders, and development partners. It was held under the theme, 'Building the Ghana We Want, Together for Sustainable Development.'
Prof. Aheto highlighted the need for formal platforms to enhance youth participation in policy formulation and implementation at various levels. He urged the government to strengthen local governance by developing accurate data systems for district assemblies and modernizing community vigilantism through technology.
He noted that such measures would improve participation, transparency, and effective decision-making at the community level. Additionally, Prof. Aheto called for broadening the tax base through digitization and formalization of the informal sector, stating that measures of accountability must be strengthened to engender trust and patriotism.
