Asante mampong: A new and disturbing strategy allegedly being used by car hijackers has been exposed after broadcaster, David Akuetteh, recounted how suspected robbers reportedly used a motorbike distraction and fake roadside activity to hijack a vehicle on the Asante Mampong stretch.
According to Ghana Web, Akuetteh narrated in a viral TikTok video how the incident unfolded around 10 pm when a driver in a Honda vehicle slowed down to navigate potholes. A motorbike rider allegedly blocked the driver, forcing him to stop. The driver rolled down his window to ask the rider to move, only for the rider to become confrontational, accusing him of attempting to cause harm.
As the argument ensued, three men approached the driver's side, revealing pistols hidden beneath their shirts. Meanwhile, another suspect pretended to fix a tire on the other side of the car, attempting to divert suspicion from the ongoing robbery.
The suspects forced the driver out and drove off with the vehicle once the motorbike rider moved. However, the driver managed to seek assistance and return to the scene. Akuetteh reported that the car was eventually abandoned by the suspects after it became jammed and locked, thanks to a GPS installed in the vehicle. The thieves had to break the car's glass to escape.
Akuetteh cautioned motorists to remain vigilant, suggesting that this incident might signal a new tactic employed by robbers to target drivers, particularly at night.
