Koforidua: The New Juaben South Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service has organised an inter-circuit quiz competition to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and inspire innovation among basic school children in the municipality.
According to Ghana News Agency, the competition was held in Koforidua, the eastern regional capital, under the theme, 'STEM Today, Innovators of Tomorrow: Building the Future Together.' This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and interest in science and technology across the six circuits of the education directorate.
Mr. James Selorm Agbenyo, the New Juaben South Municipal STEM Coordinator, highlighted that STEM education equips learners with the practical knowledge and skills required to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world. He emphasized that this approach nurtures critical thinking, creativity, resilience, and innovation while preparing young individuals for emerging opportunities in science, engineering, and other modern professions.
Mr. Agbenyo called on corporate and non-governmental organizations to collaborate with the government to expand investment in STEM education. He stated that increased funding would support the establishment of STEM laboratories, provision of teaching and learning materials, and continuous professional development for teachers to enhance science and mathematics instruction. Such investments, he noted, would improve learning outcomes and strengthen the quality of education.
Hajia Ruckaiyah Issah, Deputy Director in charge of Finance and Administration at the New Juaben South Municipal Education Directorate, encouraged students to remain committed to all their subjects, advising them not to neglect other areas of study while focusing on STEM. She also urged parents to support their children's education by providing essential learning materials, assuring them that schools would continue to enhance teaching and learning resources.
At the conclusion of the competition, Oguaa Circuit emerged as the winner, with Adweso Circuit taking second place and Nsukwao Circuit finishing third. Participating students were awarded exercise books in recognition of their involvement.
