Accra: Awal Mohammed has expressed that the calls from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to replace Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader might inadvertently bolster his position.
According to Ghana Web, Awal Mohammed highlighted that within the NPP, there has been no substantial internal opposition to Afenyo-Markin's leadership, despite some names being suggested as possible successors. He emphasized that the pressure to change leadership is primarily coming from outside the party, specifically from members of the NDC, rather than from within the NPP itself.
Awal further elaborated on Joy Prime that many of those whose names are mentioned as potential replacements are closely associated with Afenyo-Markin, which complicates the rationale behind the calls for his removal. "Almost all those names that are being bandied around, they're around him," he noted.
Awal argued that the NPP's steadfast support for Afenyo-Markin is partly a reaction to the demands from the governing NDC. "We are solidly behind him. And we think that the more they tell us to remove him, the more we have cause to keep him there," he asserted. He also affirmed that Afenyo-Markin is fulfilling the expectations of the NPP in his role as Minority Leader. "Again, he's doing what we have really asked him to do," Awal added.
