Accra: A video has emerged depicting support from members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament for Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, amid claims she might be the party's choice in the upcoming by-election. This development comes amidst a contentious political atmosphere following the death of her husband.
According to Ghana Web, Collins Adomako-Mensah, the MP for Afigya Kwabre North, cited a statement from the Majority Caucus urging the annulment of the election. The statement also mentioned a directive from the Office of the President to recall Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, who emerged victorious in the primaries.
In the video, members of the Majority Caucus are seen expressing their support for Hajia Amina Adam during a visit to her home. MP Isaac Ashai Odamtten is heard saying, "We are waiting for her in this 9th Parliament, we are waiting for her," while another supporter voiced, "Insha Allah, she is coming," as Hajia Adam was seen wiping tears from her eyes.
About the Ayawaso East Primaries
Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed was declared the winner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Ayawaso East Constituency. He secured 431 votes, surpassing Hajia Amina Adam, who received 399 votes. Other contenders included Mohammed Ramne with 88 votes, Dr. Yakubu Azimdow with 45 votes, and Najib Sani with one vote.
The primaries, which saw participation from over 1,100 accredited delegates, were marred by allegations of inducement and vote-buying. The NDC, in a statement on February 7, 2026, acknowledged reports of such incidents and announced the formation of a committee to investigate the claims.
The committee's report found that some aspirants engaged in unethical practices but did not suggest a rerun of the election due to the impending deadline for candidate nomination. The report also highlighted the absence of specific procedures in the party's constitution to address such issues.
Despite the controversies, Baba Jamal is set to represent the NDC in the parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3.
