Accra: The NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament has hired a lawyer to handle the case of detained Asante Akim North MP, Kwame Ohene Frimpong. Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, confirmed that the caucus secured a Ghanaian lawyer based in Amsterdam to provide legal support after Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the lawyer, who practices at The Hague, is handling the legal issues surrounding Frimpong's detention. Dafeamekpor shared in an interview with 3FM on May 14, 2026, that the legal team recently gained access to the warrant issued on April 26, 2026. He expressed concerns about the lack of communication from authorities, stating, "Even as a sovereign nation, I doubt if we have been informed in any way."
Frimpong, who denies any wrongdoing, maintains that he has not engaged in any activities that would attract the attention of the American government. Dafeamekpor recounted his discussions with Frimpong, stating that the MP assured him he had not been involved in any actions warranting such attention, both during his time in Parliament and prior.
The case also involves the implications of Frimpong traveling with a diplomatic passport, despite it being a private trip. Dafeamekpor mentioned that the Attorney General has been tasked to provide a legal opinion on the matter.
Parliament confirmed Frimpong's detention on May 12, 2026, with Parliament's Clerk, Ebenezer Djietror, indicating that the Speaker and House leadership are in contact with Ghana's mission at The Hague. Dafeamekpor assured that Frimpong is in good condition while legal teams work diligently on resolving the matter.
