Accra: The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its preparedness to adhere to the Supreme Court's directive mandating political parties to expand participation in selecting presidential and parliamentary candidates. The Supreme Court recently declared the delegate system unconstitutional, requiring parties to ensure all eligible members can vote directly in candidate selection within a year.
According to Ghana Web, Deputy Director of IT and Elections, Rashid Tanko Computer, expressed the party's confidence in transitioning from the delegate system to a more inclusive voting process. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining accurate membership data to facilitate this transition. Tanko stated, "It's feasible. Very feasible. I mean, why not? It's just about data. If you have the data, why can't you do it?"
Tanko further highlighted that the NDC already possesses the necessary structures and data management systems to comply with the directive. He cited the party's recent branch elections as evidence of its readiness, noting that elections were successfully conducted across more than 40,000 branches using the membership database, with members voting directly to choose their representatives.
He stressed the exercise demonstrated the party's capacity to conduct large-scale internal elections. Tanko assured that the NDC could implement the Supreme Court's directive within the required timeframe, stating, "Even if they say we should implement it this year, I can assure you we can implement it."
The Supreme Court's decision has prompted parties to reevaluate their internal election processes to ensure broader participation among members.
