Accra: The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unequivocally reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama as the leader of the party. The Council has also issued a warning to those aspiring for the flagbearer position to refrain from premature campaigning activities.
According to Ghana Web, the Council released a statement following a meeting with President Mahama on May 29, 2026, clearly delineating the party's leadership structure. The statement emphasized that President Mahama is constitutionally recognized as the Leader of the NDC. It further advised members with presidential aspirations to avoid actions that could cause division within the party.
While the Council's statement did not explicitly mention the National Chairman's ongoing 'Thank You' tour, the timing has led to speculation. The tour, which has been ongoing for nearly a year, has faced criticism from some party members who believe it confuses the roles between the Chairman's organisational duties and the President's leadership position. Concerns have been raised that the tour could position the Chairman as an alternative leader with potential presidential ambitions.
The Council reiterated Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which grants the National Executive Committee the exclusive authority to schedule presidential primaries. Until the NEC releases official guidelines, the elders have cautioned that all forms of campaigning, endorsements, and mobilization should be halted immediately.
The Council concluded, stating, "The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us."
