Accra: The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has educated pupils of Calvary Methodist 1 Basic School at Adabraka in Accra on safe and responsible use of digital platforms. The engagement was held under the theme 'Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.' This event was part of the NCCE Citizenship Week Celebration, a flagship program introduced in 2012 to promote civic responsibility and active citizenship among young people.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Justin Samwine, Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Identification Authority (NIA), served as the resource person during the session. He explained the concept of growing up in a digital environment and highlighted both opportunities and risks associated with internet use. Mr. Samwine emphasized that constitutional rights and responsibilities are applicable in the online space and urged pupils to use digital platforms responsibly.
Mr. Samwine also cautioned the pupils against cyberbullying, online exploitation, and the spread of misinformation. He advised them to verify information before sharing, protect personal data, and think critically before posting content online. To illustrate responsible use of digital tools and social media, Mr. Samwine shared practical examples from his professional experience at the NIA.
He encouraged pupils to use digital platforms for learning, innovation, and personal development while avoiding activities that could expose them to online risks. The interactive session provided an opportunity for pupils and teachers to ask questions and share experiences regarding safe internet use.
Mr. Mawuli Agbenu, Greater Accra Regional Director of the NCCE, commended the pupils for their participation and urged them to apply the lessons learned in their daily use of digital technologies. He reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to promoting civic education and equipping young people with the knowledge, values, and skills required for responsible digital citizenship and national development.
The Citizenship Week Celebration is designed to bridge the gap between pupils and professionals by bringing experienced role models into classrooms to mentor and inspire learners from Primary Four to Junior High School. This year's theme focuses on equipping children with the knowledge, values, and practical skills to uphold constitutional principles and demonstrate responsible conduct in digital spaces.
