Accra: The National Peace Council has appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm and avoid inflammatory rhetoric amid growing political tension following the recent arrests of some political actors over comments alleged to have breached the laws of the country.
According to Ghana Web, the Council, in a press release issued on May 20, 2026, expressed concern over the escalating political atmosphere and warned against actions and statements that could threaten national peace and stability. The statement emphasized the importance of exercising restraint and upholding democratic values.
The Peace Council highlighted that Ghana's democracy is founded on the principles of respect for the rule of law, constitutional rights, and due process, urging both citizens and state institutions to adhere to these principles. The statement reinforced the idea that these are non-negotiable pillars of the nation's democratic framework.
Furthermore, the Council urged security agencies and the judiciary to maintain professionalism and impartiality in their duties, especially when dealing with politically sensitive matters. The statement called for transparency and fairness, ensuring that citizens' rights and freedoms are upheld.
The Council also warned political parties and their communicators against making provocative comments that could incite violence or exacerbate political divisions.
