Techiman north: Mr Adamu Mohammed, the Techiman North District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), has issued a caution to farmers within the district to avoid cultivating near water bodies. He highlighted concerns over the pollution and degradation of water sources, including the Addaisu and Subin rivers, due to farming activities and other detrimental human practices.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Mohammed emphasized the environmental risks posed by agrochemicals, which, when washed into the rivers, contaminate water sources. In an interview conducted at Aworano, a farming community in the district, he outlined the urgent need for measures to protect these water bodies, which are being significantly affected by farming activities along their banks.
Mr Mohammed led a team that included NaDMO personnel, Department of Agriculture officials, and traditional leaders to assess the pollution levels of the Addaisu and Subin rivers at Aworano. He appealed to farmers to cease cultivating near the riverbanks and to adopt environmentally sustainable farming practices to conserve water resources.
He noted that NaDMO has ramped up efforts to protect rivers, streams, and other water bodies in the district. He also called upon traditional authorities and community members to support these initiatives. Furthermore, Mr Mohammed urged residents to protect the environment by avoiding actions that could harm natural resources and adversely impact future generations.
