Sefwi bodi: The Oti Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), in collaboration with Krachi Nchumuru Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Solomon Kuyon, has extended relief assistance to residents of Beposo who were displaced following a fatal clash over farmland ownership.
According to Ghana News Agency, the conflict, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries, arose from a protracted dispute over farmland ownership and usage between two Konkomba communities. This violent altercation led to the destruction of numerous properties, including homes, yam barns, tricycles, motorbikes, and approximately 70 bags of cement.
The clash displaced many families, depriving them of shelter, food, and their means of livelihood, thereby exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. A report available to GNA highlighted that the communities have been entangled in the land dispute for years due to vague land boundaries, which have fueled persistent tensions and frequent conflicts.
During a visit to the affected area, Mr. Foster Dzre, the Oti Regional Director of NADMO, stated that the organization was on site to evaluate the situation and deliver immediate relief support. "We are here to support our displaced brothers and sisters with essential relief items to help them cope with the current situation," he stated.
The relief items distributed included 15 bags of rice, 15 bags of maize, three cartons of sunflower oil, 20 rubber buckets, and 20 rubber pans. These were allocated to over 100 affected families in coordination with local leaders to ensure equitable distribution.
MP Solomon Kuyon, who also contributed 15 bags of rice and three cartons of sunflower oil, condemned the violence and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to arrest and prosecute those responsible. "We will not tolerate any form of violence or destruction of property in our constituency," he emphasized.
The MP encouraged the warring communities to pursue peace and dialogue, announcing plans to establish a committee to facilitate reconciliation and seek a lasting resolution to the conflict. He also committed to engaging development partners to secure additional support for the affected residents.
A youth leader in Beposo, Mr. Kofi Abudu, expressed gratitude to NADMO, the MP, and the government for their timely intervention, acknowledging that the support would significantly aid victims in their recovery. "We appreciate the support in this difficult time and appeal for further assistance, especially in rebuilding destroyed homes and caring for the injured," he added.
Mr. Abudu also appealed to the youth to remain calm and refrain from actions that might escalate tensions, emphasizing the importance of peace and unity. The incident highlights the urgent need for effective and peaceful mechanisms to resolve land disputes in the region, where such conflicts continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.
