Sefwi wiawso: The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) is taking proactive measures to combat drug and substance abuse among students by forming Anti-Drug Clubs in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the Western North Region. Mr. Dennis Adutwum-Gyimah, a Principal Narcotics Control Officer, stated that this initiative will be carried out in collaboration with school counselors in various SHSs.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Adutwum-Gyimah revealed this plan during a sensitization workshop with school counselors. He expressed appreciation for the government's support of the initiative and expressed optimism that it would effectively reduce drug use among the youth, who are considered future leaders. Mr. Adutwum-Gyimah emphasized the ongoing efforts to educate students at both basic and senior high school levels about the dangers of drugs and promised continued efforts to reduce drug usage among the youth.
The Principal Narcotics Control Officer also urged young people to refrain from using drugs to avoid becoming burdens on their families and society. He encouraged students to resist being introduced to drugs and to report any such attempts to the appropriate authorities. Additionally, Mr. Adutwum-Gyimah warned drug peddlers in the region to cease their activities, stating that NACOC would ensure they face legal consequences when apprehended.
Some school counselors, in interviews with the Ghana News Agency, praised the workshop for providing them with valuable insights on fulfilling their roles effectively. They also expressed support for the establishment of Anti-Drug Clubs in schools, viewing it as a positive step towards addressing drug-related issues among students.
