Accra:The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intensified its efforts to combat a recent increase in drug trafficking through Accra International Airport by deploying more officers, trained sniffer dogs, and new detection equipment.
According to Ghana Web, this initiative aims to enhance the screening processes for passengers at the airport, preventing the smuggling of narcotics through Ghana's primary international gateway. The increased security measures were highlighted in footage shared on social media.
A NACOC official revealed that additional steps are being taken to tighten security due to concerns about some airport personnel potentially facilitating drug trafficking. The official noted that more personnel and enhanced technology are expected to support the detection of hidden narcotics.
Some airport security officers have already been arrested over alleged involvement in drug trafficking, with several cases currently pending in court. Officers with experience in airport operations have been recalled to strengthen the team at the airport.
NACOC's increased presence, including additional trained dogs and equipment, aims to boost passenger and luggage screening as part of the Commission's heightened surveillance efforts. Investigations continue to identify and apprehend key suspects linked to recent drug trafficking incidents, with operations set to intensify in the near future.
