Kintampo: The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gershon Kpogli, the Kintampo Municipal Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has announced that the command has intensified safety measures to prevent recurring road crashes on the Kintampo-Tamale highway. The MTTD, with the support of stakeholders, has installed eight warning signs at identified crash-prone points along the highway, advising drivers to adhere to road safety regulations to control the crashes.
According to Ghana News Agency, ASP Kpogli described the crashes and fatalities that occur on the highway as preventable. He assured the department's commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to reduce these incidents. In an interview in Kintampo in the Bono East Region, ASP Kpogli said the initiative aligns with the MTTD's strategic action plans and goals to ensure safety and maintain order on the highway.
ASP Kpogli emphasized the value of human life over material gains, urging drivers, especially commercial ones, to prioritize safety. He advised commercial drivers to focus on saving lives rather than profits. The strategically placed warning signs are located at black spots, sharp curves, and sections with frequent crashes to alert drivers early.
He commended stakeholders for their support in mounting the warning signs and called for collective efforts to prevent crashes on the highway. ASP Kpogli identified human errors such as over-speeding, wrongful overtaking, and fatigue driving as causes of road crashes, cautioning drivers against negligence. He reiterated the MTTD's commitment to enforcing road safety regulations and called for cooperation from drivers and motorists.
Some commercial drivers also praised the MTTD for the warning signs, believing they will help control crashes on the highway. A commercial driver known as Sarpong described the signs as timely, noting that many drivers over-speed at night without considering the potential dangers on the highway.
