Mpohor: The Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly in the Western Region has distributed cash grants and livelihood support items to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) within the district. This initiative aims to enhance their socio-economic well-being and promote financial independence.
According to Ghana News Agency, the support was funded through the PWD allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), which has been increased from 3 percent to 5 percent by the government. This increase is part of a broader commitment by the government to expand social protection, promote inclusive development, reduce poverty among PWDs, and empower them to achieve economic self-reliance through sustainable livelihood interventions.
Madam Sophia Aubyn, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Mpohor-Fiase, emphasized during the presentation of the items at Mpohor that the Assembly is responsible for ensuring that the allocated funds directly benefit PWDs in the area. She stated, "The presentation forms part of the Assembly's ongoing efforts to empower persons with disabilities, promote social inclusion, and ensure that no one is left behind in the district's development agenda." She urged beneficiaries to utilize the support effectively for establishing or expanding their livelihoods and cautioned against selling the items for short-term financial gains.
Mr. Kofi Bentil, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpohor-Fiase, reiterated the government's commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of PWDs. He highlighted that the increase in DACF allocation from 3 to 5 percent reflects the administration's determination to provide greater support for vulnerable groups nationwide. He encouraged beneficiaries to make optimal use of the support and commended the Assembly's management, especially the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, for their efforts in identifying PWDs with genuine needs to benefit from this intervention.
Mr. Kwesi Debra, President of the Federation of Persons with Disabilities in the Mpohor-Fiase District, expressed gratitude to the government for its ongoing support and prioritization of PWDs' welfare. He appealed to beneficiaries to responsibly utilize the assistance to enhance their livelihoods, expand economic activities, and achieve financial independence.
