Berekum: Elder Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum East in the Bono Region, has called on the security to stem illegal mining activities in the constituency and the Berekum West District. He stated that checks revealed no company had been granted the license to mine at Amomaso and called for support from the community members to stem illegal mining activities in the area and protect the environment.
According to Ghana News Agency, Elder Kyeremeh emphasized that stemming illegal mining requires a collective approach and urged stakeholders to support the security services. He expressed concern that illegal mining contributes to water scarcity, health problems, and environmental harm, as well as the destruction of natural resources.
The MP's concerns arose following tension at Amomaso when a mining company attempted to undertake community mining in the area. However, some concerned residents resisted, questioning the company's license and documentation to operate in the area.
