Accra:Two failed bail applications by Ohene Kwame Frimpong, Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, suggest that Dutch authorities consider him a flight risk, says legal expert Richard Nii Amarh.
According to Ghana Web, Amarh, the Executive Director of the Centre for Legitimacy and Rule of Law, remarked that granting bail to Frimpong could complicate extradition efforts by the United States if he were to return to Ghana. This follows statements by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, South Dayi MP and Majority Chief Whip, who confirmed the rejection of two bail applications for Frimpong in the Netherlands. Frimpong remains in custody awaiting an extradition hearing set for 18 November 2026.
Amarh explained that courts take into account various factors, such as the seriousness of the charges and flight risk, before deciding on bail. He noted that Frimpong's situation is complicated by the nature of the charges, which include a romance scam, and the potential difficulty of extraditing him if he were to abscond to Ghana.
Frimpong's continued detention not only affects his legal proceedings but also impacts his constituency in Asante Akyem North, leaving it without representation. Amarh pointed out that Parliament seems reluctant to intervene, possibly hoping for a resolution to Frimpong's legal issues.
