Accra: Nana Osei-Adjei, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for New Juaben North, has openly criticized the government for its alleged inaction in rolling out the promised 24-hour economy policy. This policy was a significant campaign pledge that contributed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing victory in the 2024 elections.
According to Ghana News Agency, during a parliamentary debate on the State of the Nation address delivered by President John Dramani Mahama, Nana Osei-Adjei expressed disappointment over the absence of tangible steps towards the implementation of the policy. He stated that despite the promise, by 2026, there was no observable national framework, no emergence of new industries, no employment data related to the policy, and no clear budget allocation supporting it.
The MP highlighted a disconnect between the government's economic narrative and the realities faced by Ghanaians, pointing out issues like the high cost of living and the struggles faced by businesses. He remarked that despite discussions about economic resetting from 2025 to 2026, the economic hardships persisted.
Further, Nana Osei-Adjei questioned the discrepancies in government-reported job creation figures and challenged the Deputy Finance Minister, Mr Thomas Ampem Nyarko, on claims of low interest rates. He urged the government to disclose the banks offering loans at 10-11 percent interest rates, as claimed by the Deputy Finance Minister.
Additionally, the MP criticized the current administration for failing to recognize the achievements of the previous government, particularly in the area of maritime security assets.
