Accra: More than 100 motorbikes have been impounded in Accra as part of a crackdown on illegal courier operations. The Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission conducted the enforcement exercise, targeting unlicensed courier riders in the city.
According to Ghana Web, this operation comes after an earlier nationwide crackdown was temporarily suspended in August 2025 by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations. Nii Yeboah Burgesson, the Public Relations Manager of the Commission, disclosed the details during an interview on Channel One TV on April 21, 2026. He highlighted the collaboration with the Ghana Police Service in executing the operation, as the police possess the authority to intercept and impound motorbikes.
Burgesson emphasized the importance of courier companies and individual riders registering and obtaining valid operating licenses. They are also urged to integrate into the national logistics monitoring platform, the Integrated Courier and Logistics Management System (ICOLMS-Ghana). Riders found without the necessary licenses were issued a spot fine of GHS600.
He also mentioned that some affected riders have started the process of obtaining their licenses. "We are not here to penalize anyone. We are just here to enforce the law. So, this is an opportunity for you (unlicensed courier riders) to go on the platform and then commence your registration processes," Burgesson stated.
The enforcement effort aims to streamline the courier and delivery sector while ensuring adherence to regulatory standards.
