Accra: GoldBod Jewellery's sponsorship of this year's edition of the Women of Valour event, organised by Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah, continues to stir debate among Ghanaians.
According to Ghana Web, the subsidiary of the Ghana Gold Board clarified that their sponsorship was not monetary but involved offering discounts on jewellery pieces to some participants of the event. This clarification came amidst public debate surrounding the nature and implications of the sponsorship.
The sponsorship has sparked discussions among grassroots members and supporters of the ruling NDC government. They have voiced concerns about the lack of adequate support from the government for local initiatives, questioning why resources are being allocated to private initiatives instead of supporting local businesses, particularly cocoa farmers and party loyalists.
GhanaWeb TV conducted interviews on the streets of Accra to understand public sentiment on this issue. The responses were mixed; while some individuals viewed the sponsorship as a positive gesture towards empowering women, others believed that the support could have been better utilized by investing in local enterprises and aiding community-specific projects.
