Tumu, (UW/R) July 27, GNA- Mr Razak Korah, the Upper West Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has advised teachers to discharge their duties with be professionalism by reading and acting according to the codes of conduct of the service.

He asked teachers to refrain from actions that would bring the image of the Service into disrepute while discharging their duties, adding that, their negative attitudes would impact negatively on the future lives of their pupils.

“Any action or inaction such as drunkenness that brings the name of the teacher into disrepute is a misconduct and as teachers, let’s fight for teacher professionalism,” he said.

Mr Korah said this at the closing of a five-day training workshop for teachers held at Tumu.

The workshop was organised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF/FCE) Overseas in-service training programme.

The workshop brought together over 160 teachers from the Upper East and the Upper West regions and was aimed at updating teachers with improved teacher skills and providing mentorship for teachers in deprived and underserved areas to improve creativity in teaching.

Mr Korah urged the teachers to use the knowledge and skills they learnt to reawaken the spirit of learning among the children.

He commended the organisers of the workshop for the training and added that, “this will be beneficial to the children in a few years to come.”

Mr Dagbandow Kwame, the Deputy General Secretary of GNAT in charge of Education and Professional Development in an address called on teachers to emulate and organise similar programmes in their various schools by creating an environment conducive for pupils to love and learn.

“The future of the next generation is in the hands of the present crop of teachers, often described as the oxygen of development. That is why as a responsible Teacher Association, we see education as a right and a public good essential for the learner to improve through the quality education we pursue the child,” he said.

He appealed to GES to ensure that the various beneficiary schools make resources available to help other teachers to benefit from the skills acquired whiles reminding the participants to be ambassadors of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) by embarking on recruitment, information, membership and retention drive.

Mr Kwame noted that the Association was grateful to Organised Labour for their show of unity in the recent request for the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) with the central government.
