Accra: Minority in Parliament has called for a full and independent investigation into a missile strike on a United Nations peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon that left two Ghanaian soldiers critically injured.
According to Ghana Web, Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament, emphasized the need for an independent probe into the incident, which occurred at a base of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This call for investigation was made during a meeting between Members of Parliament's Committees on Foreign Affairs and Defence and Intelligence and the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, where the ongoing unrest in the Middle East was discussed.
Jinapor expressed grave concern over the attack during the meeting, stressing that assaults on United Nations peacekeepers are violations of established principles of international humanitarian law. Such actions, he noted, could potentially amount to war crimes.
The Minority has therefore called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident to establish the facts and ensure accountability. A statement by the lawmaker on March 12, 2026, underscored the need to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.
Furthermore, Jinapor urged for stronger security arrangements to be implemented around peacekeeping operations in Lebanon to ensure the safety of all personnel serving under United Nations mandates. 'It is equally important that stronger security arrangements are put in place around peacekeeping operations in Lebanon to guarantee the safety of all peacekeepers,' he stated.
The caucus highlighted the global respect earned by Ghanaian soldiers for their discipline and commitment to maintaining peace and protecting civilian populations in conflict zones. They also emphasized the sacrifices made by Ghanaian peacekeepers and their families, noting the importance of ensuring their safety and welfare. 'As a nation, we have a duty to stand firmly behind our troops and to insist that their safety, welfare, and dignity remain paramount wherever they serve,' the statement added.
The group concluded by commending the courage, professionalism, and dedication to duty of Ghanaian men and women serving in peacekeeping missions across the world.
