Accra: The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has initiated an investigation into claims that individuals posing as National Security operatives are involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey, in various regions of the country. This announcement was made by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, the Ministry's spokesperson.
According to Ghana Web, Schandorf revealed in an interview on TV3 that the investigation was prompted by concerns that anti-galamsey efforts in the Dominase area might be compromised by people allegedly linked to National Security. These concerns arose after the arrest of four armed illegal miners near the River Ankobra, who claimed to be working under the authority of individuals identified as 'Ras,' 'Mambo,' and 'Nana Teku,' supposedly National Security operatives from Prestea.
Schandorf stated that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has commissioned a fact-finding team to investigate the allegations. This step underscores the seriousness of the situation, as intelligence from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) suggests that certain illicit mining activities are allegedly sponsored by National Security operatives.
The investigation aims to uncover the truth behind these accusations and ensure that those involved are held accountable. The Ministry's actions reflect a commitment to addressing illegal mining and its impact on the country's natural resources.
