Sunyani: Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama's dedication to strengthen accountability in public administration. He stated that the Social Accountability Committee (SAC) would soon engage Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to assess their performance, particularly in handling public funds. The President has directed all appointees to prioritize accountability.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Ibrahim assured this during a meeting with the Bono Regional House of Chiefs in Sunyani, emphasizing that all chief executives with accountability challenges have until March 31, 2026, to regularize their records. He explained that the engagement would focus on reports from assemblies detailing inherited assets, expenditures, and the use of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and Internally Generated Funds for performance assessment.
Mr Ibrahim urged the MMDCEs to be more proactive and engage their communities effectively in implementing government policies and programs. He highlighted that, for the first time, the government had disbursed the DACF for all four quarters, and the Disability Funds would be increased from three to five percent, with arrears of the Assembly's allowances also paid.
He further emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring that all Ministers of State work diligently in implementing government policies and programs to improve the socioeconomic livelihood of the masses.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, the Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area and the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, commended the government for increasing allowances for chiefs, queen mothers, and the judicial committee of the house. He expressed concern about poor sanitation and waste management, attributing it to the termination of the contract with Zoomlion Company Limited, a waste management and sanitation firm.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Badu II called on the government to adequately resource traditional authorities to improve sanitation in the country and urged the prioritization of construction networks in border communities. He highlighted that improved roads, such as the Gonokrom-C´te D'Ivoire and Sampa-C´te d'Ivoire routes, would spur economic growth and progressive development.
