Ashanti: Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has come under scrutiny from the Gender Centre for Empowering Development (GenCED) for alleged remarks considered sexually suggestive and degrading towards New Patriotic Party (NPP) politician Akosua Manu, known as Kozie.
According to Ghana Web, the gender advocacy organisation raised concerns over comments spreading on social media and other platforms, which they claim carry explicit sexual connotations aimed at demeaning a female political figure. GenCED emphasised that while political disagreements are part of democracy, sexual harassment and misogyny should not be tolerated in Ghana's political arena.
The organisation pointed out that the alleged comments, which include explicit sexual references and derogatory language, are offensive and inconsistent with democratic standards. They warned that such behaviour contributes to a hostile environment for women in politics, discouraging them from pursuing leadership roles.
GenCED also highlighted the negative message sent when political actors resort to sexualised language against women, undermining efforts to promote women's leadership and gender equality. They referenced the government's Code of Conduct and Ethics for Ministers, stressing the importance of civility and restraint in public engagements.
The advocacy group called for an end to misogynistic rhetoric in politics and urged a public apology for the remarks. They appealed to political parties, state institutions, and media organisations to foster respectful public discourse and challenge content that encourages gender-based abuse.
Reaffirming its stance, GenCED stated that democracy is strengthened when political discussions focus on ideas and policies rather than personal attacks based on gender. Women, they argued, should be judged on their capabilities and contributions rather than being subjected to degrading comments.
