Ayawaso central: Tension erupted at the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly when the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, directed the Assembly's Municipal Finance Officer (MFO) to provide documents explaining how more than GHS400,000 allocated to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) had been spent.
According to Ghana Web, Ahmed Ibrahim instructed the finance officer to submit all relevant documents before the close of work. In a video shared by JoyNews on June 10, 2026, the minister emphasized the necessity for accountability, questioning the finance officer's inability to immediately account for the funds. He demanded all financial advice documents from the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly, stressing that they must be presented by the end of the day.
The minister highlighted the significant allocations received by the Assembly for PWDs over several quarters, questioning why only a small portion had reportedly been spent. He noted the discrepancy between the funds allocated and the amount accounted for, pointing out that at least GHS400,000 to GHS500,000 had been received, yet only GHS126,000 had been spent according to the finance officer's report.
Ahmed Ibrahim stressed the importance of accountability and efficiency within the public service, linking national development to the diligent execution of responsibilities by public officials. He drew comparisons with countries like Dubai, emphasizing the competence and honesty of their civil service as a model for Ghana.
The minister's demand for transparency was underscored by his insistence on further scrutiny, given the unaccounted funds. He questioned the finance officer's oversight, highlighting the need to account accurately for the funds allocated for PWDs, and indicated that further investigation would follow to ensure proper use of the remaining funds.
