Tumu: Mawums Construction Limited has announced that it has completed approximately 33.07 percent of the Tumu-Sissili-Navrongo Road project as part of the government's Big Push initiative. The construction firm shared this update during the second joint site meeting with the Ghana Highways Authority in Tumu, where officials inspected ongoing works, particularly the section from Banu to Kunchokor to Tumu, noting that parts of the road have received the first bitumen layer.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. William Adongo, Project Manager of Mawums Construction Limited, highlighted that the current completion level represents a substantial increase from the 13.76 percent recorded during the last inspection in February 2026. He detailed the major undertakings so far, including earthworks with natural gravel for sub-base, mechanised stabilised base, primer seal application, concrete works, road surfacing, and markings, along with the construction of bridges over Bachilehu and Navaribie.
Adongo stated that 22 kilometers of the road have been successfully scarified and reshaped, 15 kilometers of sub-base laid, and nine kilometers of primer seal completed. However, he noted that water shortages along the project corridor continue to hinder progress, despite drilling six boreholes to aid construction activities.
Mr. Adamu Yakubu, Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive, expressed concerns over the delayed completion and stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of the two bridges before the rainy season begins in June. Upper West Regional Acting Director of the Ghana Highways Authority, Mr. Livistone Damali, urged the contractor to prioritize road sign installations, especially near schools and health facilities, and to collaborate with local authorities to restore gravel pits used for construction. He reassured Tumu residents that damaged water pipelines are being reconnected with the assistance of Community Water and Sanitation.
Mr. Mohammed Issah Bataklia, Sissala East Member of Parliament, praised the contractor for the quality of work after visiting the project site with engineers from the Highways Authority. He appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to extend the dualisation of the Tumu township road to the customs border post to facilitate easier traffic flow of heavy goods and ensure the longevity of the roads.
The Tumu-Chuchuliga-Navrongo road project involves the construction of a 36-metre reinforced concrete bridge over the Kanyibie River and a 24-metre bridge over the Bechelihu stretch. Upon completion, the project is expected to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time between the Upper East Region and the Upper West Region.
