Greater accra: The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed the arrest of a man captured in a viral video attacking a nurse at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic.
According to Ghana Web, a statement issued on June 5, 2026, and signed by Dr. Robert Amesiya, Regional Director of Health Service for the Greater Accra Region, condemned the assault on the staff member after the video circulated widely on social media. The incident reportedly occurred on June 2, 2026, when the nurse, a midwife, was enforcing visiting hours at the polyclinic.
The attack was described as unprovoked and carried out by a patient's relative who had been asked to leave the facility. The Directorate expressed its support for the affected staff member and other health workers, emphasizing the importance of their safety in the line of duty.
The statement highlighted the Directorate's commitment to backing the affected midwife and all staff across their facilities, stressing that healthcare workers should be able to perform their duties without fear of physical harm. It also commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift response, which led to the arrest of the suspect and restored calm at the facility.
The suspect is expected to appear before court on Monday, June 8, 2026. The Health Directorate issued a stern warning that violence against health workers would not be tolerated and urged the public to use proper complaint channels instead of resorting to attacks.
The statement emphasized that all grievances should be directed to the Client Service Desk available in every Ghana Health Service facility, noting that assault is not a valid channel for redress. The Directorate also appealed to the public to respect health workers and follow proper procedures when lodging complaints, reinforcing the service's commitment to delivering quality healthcare in the region.
