Accra: The First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has reassured traders at the 31st December Makola Market that their livelihoods will be considered in the upcoming demolition and redevelopment plans. This commitment comes amidst concerns from traders about the Accra Metropolitan Assembly's plans to demolish parts of the market without ensuring alternative arrangements for those affected.
According to Ghana Web, traders have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama for government intervention, fearing that the redevelopment could impact their income and disrupt business at one of Accra's busiest markets. The potential for displacement and financial hardship looms if the project advances without adequate provisions.
During a visit to the market, Minister of Gender and Social Protection Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey relayed Lordina Mahama's message that the government is dedicated to managing the process in a humane and consultative manner. Dr. Lartey emphasized that the traders are not opposed to redevelopment but are concerned about safeguarding their livelihoods, a priority shared by the state.
Dr. Lartey, acting on Lordina Mahama's instructions, engaged with the traders to understand their concerns and explore viable solutions. She confirmed that discussions with the Mayor are ongoing, and the government is committed to ensuring progress without emotional or undue haste.
