Navrongo: President John Dramani Mahama, on the first day of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour in the Upper East Region, inspected the ongoing construction on the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu road. This project is a critical component of the Government's Big Push infrastructure initiative, designed to enhance connectivity between the Upper East and Upper West Regions.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama emphasized the significance of this road, explaining that it serves as a crucial link for travelers journeying from Bolgatanga to Wa via Tumu. The project, which had its groundwork initiated in 2016, faced delays until it was revived under the Big Push Programme. The Chuchuliga segment of the road is currently being constructed by MyTurn constructions, a firm praised by the President for its competence and longstanding service.
President Mahama assured that the Big Push roads are prioritized in the national budget, ensuring that financial constraints will not impede progress. The payment process is structured to guarantee that contractors receive funds within 30 days upon certification, allowing them to maintain momentum on the project. He expressed optimism that with the project on schedule, it would be ready for commissioning by the following year.
Further extending his vision, President Mahama reiterated the government's commitment to interlink regional capitals and major districts with improved roads. He also revealed plans for a second phase of the Big Push initiative, aimed at further enhancing the nation's infrastructure.
Highlighting financial achievements, Mr. Kwami Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, noted that since the directive for contractor payments was issued, the government had disbursed GHS23.1 billion by July 2026. This amount includes payments to Big Push contractors and the settlement of arrears, marking President Mahama's tenure as significant for clearing the largest portion of arrears in the country's history.
Mr. Agbodza acknowledged the challenges in the Upper East Region but assured that efforts are underway to address road issues across all constituencies and districts. In the coming months, residents can expect increased contractor activity and progress on long-standing road concerns.
