Akosombo: President John Dramani Mahama has concluded his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Eastern Region by inspecting the ongoing upgrading of the 32km Akosombo-Gyakiti Road in the Asuogyaman District. The project, which started in December 2025, is expected to be completed by December 2027 and is being executed by M/S Mmanab Company Limited.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama, after inspecting the road, addressed a durbar of chiefs and local residents at Agina. He emphasized the vision of Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to ensure all Ghanaians have access to development, including electricity. He noted that although the Akosombo Dam symbolizes this vision, the communities relocated during its construction did not initially benefit from electricity, a situation remedied during former President Jerry John Rawlings' regime.
President Mahama expressed that these communities should continue benefiting from development due to their sacrifices. He acknowledged that earlier contracts for road construction were not fulfilled but expressed confidence in the current contractor's performance and commitment. He underscored that development encompasses more than road construction, including other infrastructure that enhances people's lives.
President Mahama assured the community that Honourable Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the local Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for Finance, would work to address the area's development concerns by 2028. During the event, schoolchildren displayed placards thanking the government for educational projects benefiting the area, backed by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
The President praised the contractor's track record on the Akosombo-Gyakiti Road and expressed confidence in the project's high-quality completion. He commended those involved in the project and assured Asuogyaman's chiefs and residents of ongoing government support for development.
On the first day of the tour, which began on May 1, 2026, President Mahama commenced construction of a multi-purpose Hall and Hostel at the SDA College of Education in Asokore-Koforidua and addressed the National May Day Parade at Jackson Park in Koforidua. On the second day, he initiated the construction of the 24-Hour Economy Model Market at Asesewa and commissioned the Krobo-Odumase Divisional Police Headquarters at Laasi.
The President also engaged directly with citizens, chiefs, religious leaders, opinion leaders, students, and artisans in Koforidua before inspecting ongoing construction of student hostel facilities at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya. The tour concluded with the inspection of the Akosombo-Gyakiti Road project.
