Accra: Issues relating to LGBTQ+ rights are not a major priority for Ghanaians, according to the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who stressed that government attention remains on critical socio-economic issues.
According to Ghana Web, Kwakye Ofosu expressed his views on JoyNews on April 7, 2026, emphasizing that the LGBTQ+ subject does not rank high among the priorities of 'ordinary' Ghanaian citizens. He described the issue as a "waste of time," criticizing the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for focusing on it instead of more pressing matters.
Kwakye Ofosu questioned why the LGBTQ+ topic should dominate national conversations when many citizens are more concerned with day-to-day survival and basic needs. He argued that the realities faced by Ghanaians make the debate less significant to the average person.
The Minister highlighted that when Ghanaians start their day, their priorities are centered around employment, earning a salary, and making ends meet. He insisted that the LGBTQ+ bill is not the foremost concern of the populace and lacks relevance in their daily lives.
Kwakye Ofosu reaffirmed the government's commitment to focusing on the needs of the people, citing employment, education, healthcare, food security, and access to water as central to their agenda. He referenced the President's stance, noting that while external groups may advocate for action on LGBTQ+ issues, Ghana's priorities should remain focused on the citizens' wellbeing.
He further criticized the political opponents for giving undue attention to the bill, arguing that it does not reflect the most urgent concerns of the public. He questioned the rationale for any presidential candidate prioritizing LGBTQ+ issues over the welfare of ordinary people.
Kwakye Ofosu concluded by dismissing calls for an apology over the President's remarks, stating there is no basis for such demands.
