Kwahu afram plains north: The Kwahu Afram Plains North District Assembly in the Eastern Region has launched an initiative to install solar-powered street lights across the district. This effort aims to enhance security, visibility, and the overall appearance of communities during night-time.
According to Ghana Web, District Chief Executive (DCE) Kate Mawusi Babanawo announced the commencement of this project on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The project targets key public areas such as markets, lorry stations, health facilities, schools, and major streets in Donkorkrom and other communities within the district.
Babanawo emphasized that this initiative is part of the Assembly's broader strategy to improve infrastructure, ensure public safety, and enhance the general wellbeing of residents. She urged the community to support and protect the street lights, ensuring they serve the communities for a longer period.
This solar street-lighting project is the latest in a series of development projects spearheaded by the Assembly under Babanawo's leadership. On August 29, 2026, the Assembly commissioned nine significant projects across the district, focusing on education, healthcare, transportation, and local economic development. These projects include a two-unit Kindergarten block at Amankwa-Tornu, a CHPS compound with nurses' accommodations at Kpala, and a three-unit Junior High School block at Agordeke-Zikpo, among others.
Additionally, the DCE inaugurated a newly constructed Cattle Market at Adeemmra on July 11, 2026, to provide an organized space for cattle trading, benefiting farmers, livestock traders, and buyers. In August, Babanawo also distributed 1,850 pieces of school furniture to the Ghana Education Service to address infrastructure needs in schools across the district.
The Assembly's development efforts are aligned with the government's increased focus on utilizing the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) for priority local projects. The 2026 budget allocates GHS8.9 billion to the DACF, mandating that at least 80% of the funds be used directly for priority projects like markets, health facilities, and education infrastructure.
The solar street-lighting initiative is expected to complement ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly in areas where improved night-time visibility can aid movement, trading, and public safety. Babanawo expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his continuous support for development in the district.
With about 95 communities, approximately three-quarters of which are on islands, infrastructure and service delivery in Kwahu Afram Plains North pose unique challenges. Nonetheless, the Assembly remains committed to implementing projects that address residents' needs and foster the district's socio-economic development.
