Accra: The Kwabenya Community Senior High School has initiated its 10th anniversary celebrations by making a fervent appeal to the government, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and other relevant bodies for urgent attention to the school's infrastructural and resource needs.
According to Ghana News Agency, the appeal extended beyond governmental bodies to include the Member of Parliament (MP), traditional authorities, businesses, and civil society, urging these groups to support the cause. The school's Headmistress, Hajia Rahinatu Yakubu Salifu, stressed the importance of prioritizing education amidst numerous national demands, underscoring that investment in the school equates to investing in Ghana's future.
Hajia Salifu emphasized that while the government bears primary responsibility for public education, ensuring quality education requires a collective effort. The anniversary's theme, "Ten years of educating minds, shaping characters and empowering futures through community engagement," reflects this shared responsibility.
She highlighted the essential need for additional classrooms and improved teaching facilities to cater to the school's growing enrollment. Salifu acknowledged former President John Dramani Mahama's role in establishing the school, recognizing its initial enrollment of nearly 600 students, which has now grown to over 2,030. To date, about 6,000 students have graduated from the institution.
Madam Elikplim Akurugu, the MP for Dome-Kwabenya, pledged collaboration with the education ministry and other partners to enhance the school's infrastructure. Earlier this year, her office refurbished the school's library and donated essential furniture while initiating plans for a mechanized borehole to address sanitation concerns.
Guest speaker Mr. Francis Steele, a former education director, encouraged fostering students' skills in diverse fields, while Mr. Edmund Agbo, the Municipal Chief Executive, praised the school's foundation and commendable student behavior over the years.
Professor Samuel B. Dampare, the Board Chairman and Director General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, proposed boarding facilities for final-year students to enhance academic performance. The anniversary celebrations, scheduled for November, include various engaging activities such as talks, competitions, and speech events.
