Koforidua: Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has suspended all Students' Representative Council (SRC) Week activities following the arrest of 10 persons by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) over the alleged sale of cannabis-infused products on campus.
According to Ghana News Agency, the university authorities explained that the decision was made after a NACOC operation during the celebrations led to the arrests and initiated separate investigations by both the Commission and the university. Mr. Maclean Lovelace-Dodoo, Head of Public Affairs at KTU, announced that all SRC Week activities were halted pending the outcomes of the ongoing investigations.
"The SRC events have been temporarily cancelled pending the determination of investigations that NACOC is carrying out," Lovelace-Dodoo stated. He emphasized that the university will base its next steps on the findings of its internal committee and NACOC's investigations. An independent committee has been formed by the university to delve into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Furthermore, Lovelace-Dodoo mentioned that the university is considering providing psychosocial support for students possibly affected by the incident. "So, if there is any programme at all to be carried out, we have regulations. If counselling is required, students will be given the necessary support," he added.
Seven of the 10 individuals arrested have been identified as KTU students, according to Lovelace-Dodoo. These students are currently held in NACOC custody in Accra as the investigations proceed.
