Accra: Some students participating in the Dormabin Inter-Circuit Games were injured in a head-on collision between a cargo truck (VR 342-15) and a private car (GT 1109-18) on the Tokuroano-Dormabin road in Krachi East Municipality, Oti Region. The accident occurred as the students were returning from the Adokwanta Municipal Inter-Circuit Games competition.
According to Ghana News Agency, the cargo truck carrying the students collided with a private vehicle, which was then hit from behind by a Municipal Assembly Nissan pick-up with registration number PV 380-18, transporting chairs for a commissioning event at Asukawkaw. The injured students were rushed to the Dormabin Health Facility and the Tokuroano Clinic, while those in critical condition were referred to the Worawora Government Hospital for further treatment.
The use of a cargo truck to transport the students has sparked controversy in the municipality, despite the availability of school buses. Some residents interviewed by Ghana News Agency accused sports authorities of failing to arrange safer transportation, noting the availability of buses from Dambai College of Education, Oti Senior High Technical, Yabram Community Day Senior High School, and Asukawkaw Senior High School.
Police at the Tokuroano Station confirmed the incident and stated that preparations were underway to invite personnel from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority to conduct tests on the vehicles involved. Mr. Foster Adom, Assembly Member for the Dormabin Electoral Area, called for a thorough investigation into the use of a cargo truck for student transportation. He emphasized that funds allocated for sports activities could have been used for safer transportation and demanded accountability from the municipal sports authorities.
