Accra: Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has expressed his shock over the resignation of former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo from the Council of State, describing her appointment as a significant boost to Ghana's democracy.
According to Ghana Web, Kpebu shared his reaction during an appearance on Ghana Tonight on June 15, 2026. He stated that he was 'extremely shocked' by Akuffo's resignation, especially since no official reason had been provided for her decision. Kpebu emphasized the impact of her appointment by President John Dramani Mahama, in consultation with Parliament, highlighting the widespread belief that she would offer candid and independent advice to the presidency.
Kpebu underscored that Sophia Akuffo's perceived independence was crucial due to her family ties with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and her prior appointment as Chief Justice during his administration.
