Kumasi: The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has initiated the demolition of unauthorized structures and the removal of trees along the Santasi Roundabout-Asokwa Interchange corridor. This development aims to facilitate the construction of a dual-carriage road, a significant infrastructure project intended to reduce traffic congestion and enhance mobility within the metropolis.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise commenced on Monday as part of the preparatory works for the dualisation of the road. Mr. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, the Mayor of Kumasi, led a team comprising KMA officials, city engineers, and security personnel to oversee the demolition activities. The team dismantled wooden kiosks, billboards, metal containers, and makeshift stalls while also removing trees encroaching on the road reservation.
Mr. Boadi addressed the media, noting that notices had been served to all affected occupants, allowing them adequate time to relocate prior to the commencement of the demolition exercise. He emphasized the project's importance to the city's development agenda, underlining the necessity of removing all obstacles to ensure its successful execution. He stated, "This road is critical to Kumasi's development. We cannot allow unauthorized structures to delay a project that will benefit the entire city."
The Mayor further explained that the demolition exercise would proceed in phases over the coming weeks to ensure the complete clearing of the right of way for construction works. He warned traders, artisans, and other occupants against returning to the cleared areas, cautioning that violators would be subject to prosecution. Residents and motorists have consistently raised concerns about the ongoing traffic congestion along the Santasi-Asokwa corridor, particularly during peak hours.
The completion of the dual-carriage road is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time and improve traffic flow between Santasi, Ahodwo, Asokwa, and the Kumasi Central Business District.
