Kikam: Residents of Kikam and Asemko in the Ellembelle District have been urged to participate in an upcoming hypertension screening and awareness program as part of this year's World Hypertension Month celebrations. Mr. Paul Kodwo Kwaw, the Assembly Member for the Kikam and Asemko Electoral Area, emphasized the importance of community involvement during an announcement in Kikam.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Directorate in Ellembelle is set to implement a series of activities throughout May, including community outreach, public education, blood pressure screenings, and media engagements. These efforts are part of a global campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO) aimed at raising awareness on the prevention, early detection, and control of high blood pressure.
This year's campaign theme is 'Measure Your Blood Pressure, Control it, Live Longer.' Mr. Kwaw highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that hypertension often goes undetected due to a lack of symptoms, making early detection vital. He encouraged residents to regularly check their blood pressure, reduce salt intake, exercise, maintain a healthy weight, avoid harmful alcohol use and smoking, adhere to prescribed medication, and attend regular hospital reviews.
The Assembly Member also urged residents to manage stress effectively and adopt healthier lifestyles. The campaign is being spearheaded by the Ellembelle District Health Directorate.
