Keta MCE pledges support to tidal waves’ victims

Keta (VR), March 6, GNA- Mr Emmanuel Gemegah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Keta has pledged the continuous support of the Municipal Assembly to victims of recent tidal waves disaster.

A storm surge on the first weekend of November 2021, flooded homes in the Municipality’s coastal communities including Kedzikope, Abutiakope and Keta Central rendering about 2,000 people homeless.

This attracted national attention leading to individuals, groups and the government supporting the victims in one way or the other to alleviate their sufferings.

Mr Gemegah in a speech on Ghana’s 65th Independence Day parade at Keta, sympathised with the victims for the loss they suffered and assured that just as the Assembly supported them during those trying times, it would continue to help them get back on their feet.

“I know and feel what you have felt during your loss. Losing valuable items and your sleeps with nowhere to lay your heads. About thousands of you became homeless but we did not forget you in your difficult moment. The municipal Assembly was with you.

“With much works and call for help, we have been able to secure relief items to ensure that victims were adequately supported. Water was drained out of houses to allow victims to reclaim their homes. The Municipal Assembly is still working hard to put in place measures to reduce the effects of the tidal disturbances,” he said.

The MCE said the Assembly was working on projects to “construct new sea defence in areas that were prone to the devastating effect of the high tidal waves and appealed to owners of houses built close to the sea to consider relocating to other areas to avert any damage to their households.

The parade, which had in attendance municipal security chiefs, heads of department, traditional leaders and municipal executives of the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress was on the theme, “Working Together, Bouncing Back Better”.

It saw students and pupils of second cycle institutions and basic schools as well as cadet corps in addition to other identifiable groups, put up wonderful performances to commemorate 65 years since Ghana gained her independence from the British.

Mr Gemegah touched on the theme of the anniversary and charged the people of Keta to work together for Keta to rise saying, “coming together is the beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success.”
