Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as the new Minister for Defence, signaling a return to a familiar role for Adjei, who previously served in the ministry during the President's first term. Adjei's appointment follows the death of Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
According to Ghana Web, Adjei, who was the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, has been reassigned to take over the Defence Ministry, pending parliamentary approval. Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson had been overseeing the ministry in an acting capacity for nearly a year following Boamah's untimely demise.
If confirmed by Parliament, Adjei will bring his prior experience as Deputy Minister for Defence from 2015 to 2016 back to the ministry. His previous tenure provided him with valuable insights into Ghana's defence operations and policy-making processes, particularly during a period of emerging security challenges in the region.
Adjei's academic credentials further complement his governmental experience. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Peace, Security and Intelligence Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra, where he excelled as the top student in his class in 2022. His education in security strategy, intelligence coordination, and conflict management aligns with the core responsibilities of a Defence Minister.
In addition to his Master's degree, Adjei has a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and an Executive MBA from the University of Ghana. His reassignment from the role of Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, which he held since February 2025, underscores his versatility in handling various governmental responsibilities.
Adjei's nomination comes at a critical time as the Defence Ministry seeks continuity and leadership amidst regional security concerns. His appointment is expected to bring stability and an informed perspective to the ministry, ensuring that the Ghana Armed Forces continue to strengthen their capacity and readiness.
