Accra: Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, Head of the Kantanka Family and Leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana (KAMOG), has announced that the family has instructed its lawyers to commence legal proceedings to ensure that the last will of the late Apostle Professor Emeritus Kwadwo Safo is honoured. Addressing the media on Monday July 27, 2026, Nana Akofena said the decision followed months of failed reconciliation efforts over the burial and final funeral rites of the renowned industrialist, inventor and church leader.
According to Ghana Web, Nana Akofena stated that since the passing of Apostle Safo, he and members of the Aduana Kotoko Royal Family had made 'every reasonable effort' to bring all family members together for a dignified and befitting burial. He revealed that he had personally undertaken reconciliation initiatives with his siblings, including his sister, former MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, and had sought the intervention of church elders, chiefs, queen mothers and other traditional leaders.
'Unfortunately, despite these numerous interventions and goodwill efforts, the desired reconciliation has not been achieved,' he said, describing the outcome as 'deeply disappointing' given the values of unity his late father exemplified.
The Kantanka Family head raised concerns over the implementation of the late Apostle's will, which was read by Sarah Adwoa Safo. 'Regrettably, in my view, the implementation of those wishes has not proceeded in the manner contemplated by the will,' Nana Akofena stated. He specifically cited the fact that 'the Kantanka Family has not been given custody of the mortal remains of our late father, notwithstanding the provisions of the will.' He added that other matters in which he believes the wishes of the late Apostle have not been honoured have further complicated efforts to reach a consensus on the burial.
Following the deadlock, Nana Akofena said the family had engaged the law firm Kwame Gyan and Associates, led by Prof. Kwame Gyan, to seek legal relief. 'This decision has been taken with great reluctance and only after exhausting every reasonable avenue for an amicable resolution,' he told journalists. He expressed confidence that 'the courts will ensure that justice is served and that the wishes expressed by our late father are duly respected.'
Nana Akofena urged all members of KAMOG, the Kantanka Family and the public to 'remain calm, exercise restraint and continue to uphold the values of peace, unity and respect.' He also appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unverified information that could undermine the legal process. He emphasised the need to preserve the legacy of Apostle Safo, describing him as a man 'whose life was dedicated to faith, innovation, industrialisation, national development and service to humanity.'
'I wish to assure all members of Kristo Asafo Mission, the Kantanka Family, our sympathisers and the good people of Ghana that every lawful and appropriate effort will continue to be made to ensure that Apostle Prof. Emeritus Kwadwo Safo is accorded a befitting burial in accordance with his wishes,' he concluded. The late Apostle Prof. Emeritus Kwadwo Safo was the founder of Kristo Asafo Mission and the Kantanka Group, known for its contributions to indigenous automobile manufacturing and technology in Ghana.
