Accra: The Kaneshie Footbridge in Accra is set to undergo major repairs, with work expected to take between six and nine months, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has confirmed. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Relations at the AMA, made this known in an interview on Channel One TV on April 6, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, this particular section of the footbridge has faced challenges over time, particularly with drainage and waste management, which has affected its overall condition. Gilbert Nii Ankrah emphasized that the current renovation efforts are not just about patching holes but involve a comprehensive structural reinforcement of the bridge. This is intended to provide safe access for pedestrians across Kaneshie and ensure the bridge's longevity.
Ankrah addressed concerns about previous repairs, noting that past efforts only provided temporary fixes, leading to recurring issues. This time, the renovation aims for durability, promising a stronger bridge that will last at least 10 years. The renovation period will see a section of the bridge, referred to as the 'enclave,' temporarily closed for drainage works and structural improvements.
Once completed, the bridge will be fully functional, enhancing traffic flow and infrastructure safety in Kaneshie. Ankrah also announced a ban on trading activities on the bridge post-renovation, explaining that traders have been relocated to nearby markets to ensure pedestrian safety and maintain public order. The footbridge was closed on April 2, 2026, for urgent rehabilitation due to safety concerns about its deteriorating condition.
