Manchester: Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol has expressed delight with the appointment of Italian coach Enzo Maresca as the new manager of Manchester City. The former Chelsea boss has been tasked with taking over from Pep Guardiola, who stepped down at the end of last season after a decade of success.
According to Ghana Web, Maresca signed a three-year deal to succeed the legendary Spaniard, having previously won the Championship title with Leicester and the Club World Cup with Chelsea. The 46-year-old took charge of City for the first time in a friendly defeat on penalties by Inter Milan in Hong Kong.
"The level is that high and he has been chosen with reason as the manager. I think he has a quality, has some new ideas and also we need to see what we are going to do [with] the style of [play], the football we are going to play and the tactics," said Gvardiol. He emphasized the need for time and adaptation to the new management style.
Gvardiol also spoke about his personal interaction with Maresca, mentioning discussions about his previous injury and playing style under Guardiola. Gvardiol had missed significant game time last season due to a leg injury but returned towards the end of the campaign.
The departure of Guardiola was anticipated within the squad, although it wasn't confirmed until late in the season. Gvardiol noted that the timing of Guardiola's announcement was crucial to avoid mental distractions during the season.
As for Manchester City's captaincy, following the departure of Bernardo Silva and John Stones, candidates like Ruben Dias and Rodri are in consideration. Gvardiol, having signed a new five-year deal with City, acknowledged the leadership qualities within the team and expressed readiness to take on more responsibility if required.
