Brussels: Belgium international Jeremy Doku says the FIFA World Cup became a spiritual turning point after injuries, criticism, and unmet expectations exposed what he described as pride in his own heart. Speaking in a reflective YouTube interview, the winger admitted he entered the tournament expecting to become one of its standout performers after enjoying an impressive club season.
According to Ghana Web, Doku revealed that constant praise from journalists before the tournament also affected him mentally. "They kept saying I was the best player in the national team. Although I rejected it publicly, I realised pride was growing inside me," Doku said. However, injuries, illness, and disappointing performances forced him to reassess his priorities.
Doku explained how the setbacks became valuable life lessons rather than disappointments. "I feel like God used this World Cup to show me what was in my heart," he stated. The Manchester City attacker said he eventually realised his purpose was not to become the face of the tournament but to faithfully serve God regardless of his role on or off the pitch. "My goal isn't to be on the front page. My goal is to serve Him in whatever role He gives me," he added.
Looking back, Doku believes the difficult experience transformed his perspective. "It wasn't my best tournament on the pitch, but if God is pleased, then I'm content," he concluded.
